Hermaphrodites and Hermaphroditism

Hermaphroditic condition is not a disorder by nature and several theses exists to prove that nature has hermaphroditic condition in itself. Therefore visualizing a hermaphrodite animal or man should not be different from that of viewing a normal animal or normal human. Nature has undergone this revolution not only in animal but also in plants. Hermaphroditic condition was developed with the main reason to give assured reproductive partner in case an opposite gender is not available to perpetuate the species.

Advantages of Hermaphroditic condition in Plants and invertebrates:

Plants are diverse in their occurrence and there is a lot of chance that an opposite gender plant might be unavailable for perpetuating that plant species. The distance between the trees might be very long that pollination through animals or bids might have been impossible. In such cases plants evolve to become a hermaphrodite, they own both the gender organs to reproduce their species. Though it is quite common in plants and a few animals, vertebrates face this hermaphroditic condition very rarely. The reason for this rare occurrence of hermaphrodism in vertebrates is that, vertebrates tend to be locomotive frequently and they live in groups. This group living assures that they have both males and females in the group assuring the exponentiation growth of the species.

Disadvantages of Hermaphroditic condition in Vertebrates:

Hermaphroditic conditions or hermaphroditism in vertebrates are usually conditioned with infertility rather than fertility like in plants and invertebrates. This is the reason that hermaphroditic condition is unwelcome among vertebrates. This pathological condition has proved it unfavourable for vertebrate’s species. This problem is because at a time, only one organ could be active and hence a vertebrate could act as a male or a female using the hermaphroditic condition it has obtained.

Hermaphrodite Categories:

Hermaphrodites are characterised by two different features. One is that they could be synchronous and the other is that they could be sequential.

  1. Synchronous hermaphrodite: The organisms tend to be active as two genders at the same time. This yields one advantage if the group has only females and a single hermaphrodite then that hermaphrodite could turn into a male and reproduce.
  2. Sequential hermaphrodite: At any one time, only one of the genders would be strong. The genes would also reflect the changes of this gender inside the organism. This is further classified into protandrous and protogynous.

A good research on hermaphrodites is being done continuously to help humans come out of the hermaphroditic condition in a good way. It would be good if human could be fertile as a hermaphrodite for we can perpetuate if we are at the verge of destruction.
